How to Care for Alpaca Fur
Alpaca fur is naturally resilient. Thoughtful care will help preserve its softness, volume, and appearance over time.
Protect from prolonged sunlight
Avoid leaving alpaca fur in direct sunlight for extended periods, as prolonged exposure may gradually affect its color. When displayed in a bright room, occasional rotation can help ensure more even exposure.
Brush Gently
When needed, use a soft-bristle brush and work gently in the natural direction of the fur. This helps separate the fibers, restore volume, and maintain the surface appearance without unnecessary pulling.
Spot clean when needed
For small spills or marks, lightly blot the affected area with a soft cloth dampened with cold water. Avoid rubbing or saturating the fur, as excessive moisture and friction can cause matting.
If necessary, use a small amount of mild detergent intended for delicate fibers, testing first on an inconspicuous area.
After spot cleaning, allow the fur to air dry naturally. If needed, a hair dryer may be used on a cool or very low-heat setting, held at a distance, while gently directing the fibers into place. Avoid concentrated or high heat.
Avoid machine washing and tumble drying
Do not machine wash or tumble dry alpaca fur. Excessive water, agitation, and heat can alter the texture and appearance of the material. For more extensive cleaning, we recommend consulting a professional cleaner experienced with fur.
Air dry naturally
If the fur becomes damp, allow it to dry in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Once completely dry, gently smooth or brush the fibers to restore their natural direction and volume.
Store with care
When not in use, keep alpaca fur in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from prolonged sunlight. Avoid compressing the fur for extended periods.
For pieces that require storage, a breathable fabric cover or bag is preferable to plastic, which can restrict airflow.
Avoid harsh chemicals
Do not use bleach, strong detergents, solvents, or aggressive cleaning products on alpaca fur. If deeper cleaning is required, professional cleaning is recommended.
Natural shedding
A small amount of shedding may occur naturally, particularly with use or handling. An occasional gentle shake can release loose fibers. Avoid pulling individual fibers from the fur.
