Alpaca maintains its qualities when its structure is left undisturbed.
The surface of the material is composed of fine fibres that sit in alignment. This alignment is what gives it consistency—how it feels, how it holds its form, and how it responds with use. When that structure is disrupted, the change is gradual but visible.
Heat is one of the primary factors. High temperatures alter the fibre at a structural level, affecting both texture and stability. The result is not immediate damage, but a loss of consistency over time.
Friction has a similar effect. Repeated contact against rough surfaces causes the outer fibres to separate from their alignment. This leads to irregularity in the surface, often mistaken for wear, but in practice a result of mechanical stress.
Moisture, when controlled, does not harm the material. In excess, or combined with agitation, it can. Movement in water—rather than water itself—is what affects the structure.
For this reason, alpaca does not benefit from intensive handling. It benefits from restraint.
When the material is left to settle naturally, its properties remain stable. The surface stays even, the texture controlled, and the form consistent through use.
What preserves alpaca is not intervention, but the absence of excess.
